WHAT IS A CHALLENGE AND WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING CHALLENGES IN INNOVATANK?
A challenge is a case study that is created by professors or Innovatank. It can be a compilation of videos and text and innovators are asked to work to find solutions for the issue(s) at hand.
HOW IS A CHALLENGE SET UP?
There are 3 main steps to for setting up a challenge in Innovatank.
- Enter basic details of the challenge
- Build an evaluation template
- Set up the repository page

Create a Challenge
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PRIVATE AND PUBLIC CHALLENGE?
A Private Challenge allows professionals to grant access to specific participants. A Public Challenge is open to all members of
Innovatank.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RESEARCH AND STAGGERED TIME CHALLENGE?
Research format challenge has a start date and an end date. Innovators have the full duration to submit the solutions. The administrator can add a buffer (keeping the challenge open for last minute participants to submit their solution).
Staggered Time format allows innovators to attempt the challenge in a specific time slot between the specified start date and end date of a challenge. For example: You can host the challenge from Jan 1 until Jan 3. The innovator(s) would have a specific time (with timer) within that time to do the work. Example 3 hours from the time they start working till submission time.
HOW CAN I SEND IMPORTANT NOTIFICATIONS TO ALL PARTICIPANTS ON A CHALLENGE?
Adding an announcement to your challenge will immediately send an email notification with the announcement details to all the participants. You can also check the box to send the announcement to people who are not participants but follow the challenge.
WHAT DO I DO IF I WANT TO ADD IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO A CHALLENGE THAT IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE BY PARTICIPANTS?
Add all sensitive information in the Repository section of a challenge so only allowed subscribers can see it.
WHEN DO PARTICIPANTS HAVE ACCESS TO THE REPOSITORY OF A CHALLENGE?
Participants will have access to all sensitive information of a challenge on the Start Date of the challenge and not Registration Date.
WHAT IS BUFFER TIME AND WHEN IS IT USED?
Buffer time is used to give participants more time on a Research case. It will keep the original due time/last submission date time, but it will keep the case open for submissions until the buffer time is over.
Buffer time is not used on Staggered cases.
HOW CAN I ADD MORE TIME FOR INNOVATORS IN STAGGERED CASES?
Buffer time is not used on Staggered cases. The admin on a case can add more time for participants inside the dashboard
WHO DO I CONTACT TO ADD A NEW CATEGORY AND/OR SUBCATEGORY FOR CHALLENGES?

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH DIFFICULTY LEVEL TO CHOOSE ON A CHALLENGE?
Easy level on a challenge is usually used for theoretical base cases. Medium level is used in more real life practice cases.
WHAT IS SOLUTION COUNT?
The solution count allows administrators to enter the number of evaluators or judges can be evaluate this challenge.
WHAT IS THE LAST EVALUATION DATE?
The Last Evaluation Date is the last day judges or other evaluators can give feedback on a case.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I SELECT PUBLISH SOLUTION ON A CHALLENGE?
Publish Solution allows the participants to see not only their own solution but the top 5 solutions.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE SELECT HIDE TEXT AREA IN WORKSPACE?
Checking Hide Text Area in a Workspace will not allow participants to type in a text as a response or as part of the solution. They will only be allowed to upload files for solution.
CAN I USE MY OWN TEMPLATE IN EVALUATION CRITERIA?
Yes, Innovatank provides you with a selection of templates to choose from, but you can always create your own. It is important that the total of the evaluation points adds up to 100.
Managing Challenges FAQs
CAN THE ORGANIZER MAKE CHANGES TO A CHALLENGE AFTER IT HAS STARTED?
Organizers can add/edit information on a challenge at any point by clicking on the Edit icon.

HOW DO I SHARE A CHALLENGE?
Go to the challenge you want to share and click on the icon copy
.This will generate a summary page of the challenge so others can log in or Create Account to view the details of the challenge.
HOW DO I MANAGE THE STAGERED TIME ON A CHALLENGE (ADDING TIME-REMOVING TIME) FOR PARTICIPANTS?
There will be plus (+) button next to the timer of a staggered challenge. This will allow you to add or subtract time. To subtract time type minus (-) and the number of minutes.
HOW CAN I SEND IMPORTANT NOTIFICATIONS TO ALL PARTICIPANTS ON A CHALLENGE?
Adding an announcement to your challenge will immediately send an email notification with the announcement details to all the participants. You can also check the box to send the announcement to people who are not participants but follow the challenge.
WHAT IS REPLICATE PARTICIPANTS USED FOR?
Replicate Participants allows you to create a new challenge publish it and then push the participants into their respective challenges. There is no need for participants to look and subscribe for the challenge.
HOW DO I REPLICATE INNOVATORS(PARTICIPANTS) INTO OTHER CHALLENGES(GROUPS)?
Once your main challenge is populated, simply replicate innovators into the rest of the challenges.
- On your dashboard, click on the replicate icon.
- Select all students.
- Click on Replicate Participants.

CAN THE ORGANIZER CHANGE THE ADMIN OF A TEAM?
As the organizer on a challenge, the professional has the power to change the admin on a team by clicking on icon next to the name of current admin and removing then click next to the name of another participant and adding the role.
WHAT ARE ROOMS IN A CHALLENGE?
Room is another term for Group. This is where students are grouped to work together on a challenge.
HOW DO I KNOW THERE IS AN EVALUATOR REQUEST PENDING MY APPROVAL?
There will be a number greater than 0 next to challenge.
HOW DO I KNOW A CHALLENGE IS CLOSED FOR SUBMISSIONS?
There will be a key icon below the challenge.
HOW CAN I VIEW THE SUBMISSIONS?
Click on the solution icon(key) below the challenge and you will see the submissions. If you wish to download the documents, click on the download all icon.
EVALUATING CHALLENGES FAQs
DO PROFESSIONALS TAKE PART IN THE APPROVAL PROCESS?
Professionals go back to the challenge for the final approval of grades and ranks. They can make changes to marks if needed but need to add the justifications (ex cheating).
HOW DO I BEGIN THE FEEDBACK PROCESS?
Once the challenge has ended, or you have set the evaluation date to start, you can follow these options:
If you are using Peer to Peer – students will see the challenge evaluation pop up on their dashboard. You can also submit an evaluation. Click on go to evaluation.
If you are not using Peer to Peer – you can click on go to evaluation and provide feedback and grades.
WHO CAN BE AN EVALUATOR ON A CASE/CHALLENGE?
An evaluator can be a professor, a member of the community who is an expert on the subject matter, a profession from the business marker related to the subject matter, a member of the Innovatank team etc.
IS THERE A MAXIMUM NUMBER OF EVALUATORS ON A CALLENGE?
No, the organizer(professional) who created the case can pick the number of evaluators/solution.
WHAT IS THE AGGREGATION PROCESS?
The aggregation process is the compilation of evaluations, marks, ranks on a challenge anonymously when there are 2 or more evaluators before sending the Executive Summary evaluation for final approval.
WHO IS IN CHARGE OF AGGREGATING EVALUATIONS?
The head evaluator oversees the aggregation process. The head evaluator is the evaluator from a panel of judges or group or evaluators on a challenge who clicks on the Aggregate Evaluations button.
CAN INNOVATORS' (PARTICIPANTS') NAMES BE MADE ANNONYMOUS TO EVALUATORS?
Yes, the administrator of the challenge can hide the names of the participants on the challenge.
HOW CAN EVALUATORS REQUEST ACCESS TO THE DETAILS OF A CHALLENGE AND THE SUBMISSIONS?
Evaluators are initially granted a user name and password to Innovatank where they have access to all the available active challenges. An evaluator can submit a request to be granted access to a challenge and the submissions. This request is sent to the Professional on the challenge who will then approve or not the request.
AT WHAT POINT ARE RESULTS OF A CHALLENGE FULLY PUBLISHED?
Once the administrator has added their feedback, ranking, comments, and final approval they forward the results to the administrator at Innovatank. Innovatank sends innovators (participants) notifications with their scores and ranks.
